Live Report - Fraser-McGurk's blazing knock takes Capitals to fifth

By Hemant Brar

Capitals win by 10 runs

Rasikh went for 16 in the penultimate over but dismissed Nabi, which meant it was Tilak or bust for MI in the final over with 25 needed.
So, he went for a risky second run on the first ball of the 20th only to be found short by an accurate throw from substitute Sumit Kumar. Mukesh held his nerve for the next five balls to seal the game for Capitals.
The win means they are now fifth on the points table with ten points from as many games. MI stay rooted to ninth; they have six points from nine matches.
That's all from our side for this game. See you soon.

MI not giving up

Do not give up. That has been the theme of this season. And going with that, Tilak hit Kuldeep for two sixes and two fours in a 21-run 15th over.
That reduced the task to 85 required from five overs. In the next over, Tilak brought up his fifty off just 25 balls.

Rasikh makes an impact

After conceding only five in his first over, he has sent back Hardik. It was a back-of-the-hand slower ball that Hardik looked to take on but ended up skying towards point. An easy catch for Mukesh there.
Two balls later, he had Nehal Wadhera caught behind. It was a length ball that Wadhera looked to steer it towards deep third. But there was little room and he ended up guiding to Pant.
Tim David joins Tilak in the middle.
MI 141/5 after 13. They need 117 from seven overs.

Hardik takes on Kuldeep

MI had slowed down a bit after the powerplay but Hardik's lusty hits have kept them in hunt.
After hitting Axar for a six on the last ball of the eighth over, he took on Kuldeep and hit him for three fours and a six in the ninth.

Meanwhile, DC have brought in Rasikh Salam as their Impact Player. Kumar Kushagra has been subbed out.

Khaleel gets the big fish

Suryakumar was looking dangerous. Earlier in the over, he had scooped a length ball from outside off over fine leg for a six but Khaleel had him with a slower ball. Surya did check his shot in the last moment but it was too late by then and Williams accepted a dolly in covers.
Surya departs for 26 off 13.

Mukesh gets Kishan

Mumbai are scoring at around 11 an over but have lost both their openers. Kishan tried to take on Mukesh but ended up miscuing the lofted shot towards mid-off, where Axar Patel pedalled back to take the catch.
After just one single on the first four balls, SKY ends the over with two fours.

Khaleel removes Rohit

Having scored only 8 off seven balls, the pressure was on Rohit to go big. He looked to clear mid-on against Khaleel but ended up slicing it towards mid-off where Hope put in a slide to his left to grab the chance.
Suryakumar Yadav, the Impact Player, walks in. Nuwan Thushara has been subbed out.

Mumbai off to a quick start

Bowling consistently in excess of 145kph, Williams made a good impression. He even hurried Rohit with a short ball, with the batter taking evasive action and getting a top edge over the keeper for a couple. But a wide down the leg side that went to the boundary ruined an otherwise excellent over.
In the next over, Ishan Kishan hit Khaleel Ahmed for three successive fours to take MI to 29/0 after two overs.

False start for Williams

Playing his first IPL game, Lizaad Williams has had an inauspicious start. In his delivery stride, he landed on the side of his shoe and slipped. Thankfully, he is alright, and is ready to go after a change of shoe.

Capitals finish on 257 for 4

It was yet another six-fest - Capitals hit 17 sixes in their innings, which ended on 257 for 4. Stubbs was responsible for the fireworks towards the end, finishing on 48 not out off 25. But the big question is, will it be enough?

Bumrah gets Pant

It was a slower bouncer and Pant could not get on top of it. As a result, he was not in control of the pull and was caught at long leg by Rohit Sharma.
Their head-to-head now reads: 46 balls, 55 runs, seven dismissals.
Despite a wide, Bumrah conceded only six in the 19th over. After going for 18 in his first over, he concedes only 17 in the next three to finish with figures of 4-0-35-1.

Stubbs shows his wares

In Capitals' previous game, we saw Tristan Stubbs taking apart R Sai Kishore. Today, he has done the same against Luke Wood.
Two scoops and two reverse scoops on the first four balls of the over fetched him 18 runs. For the last two balls, he cleared his front leg and pulled him through midwicket.
Stubbs was premeditating throughout and still Wood had no answer.

Pant vs Bumrah

6 Before Saturday, Pant had fallen to Bumrah six times in 43 balls while scoring only 48 runs.
Today, Pant hit Bumrah for a six on the first ball he faced from the bowler. But Bumrah made a good comeback and conceded only nine in the over.
DC 199/3 after 16. ESPNcricinfo's Forecaster is predicting 247 for Capitals. But will that be enough?

Hope, Pant keep Capitals going

Mohammad Nabi has Porel stumped in the tenth over but there is little respite for MI as Hope and Pant have kept scoring at ten an over.
Hope, in particular, has been impressive. We know he has improved his six-hitting in ODI cricket in the last one year or so but he was not able to translate the same into the T20 format. Until today. He smashed five sixes in his 17-ball 41 before Wood had him caught at deep midwicket.
Tristan Stubbs joins Pant in the middle.

Chawla gets Fraser-McGurk

It looked like Fraser-McGurk was on his way to the fastest century in T20 cricket but Chawla had him holing out to deep midwicket for 84 off 27 balls. So Chris Gayle's record of a 30-ball hundred stays intact.
Shai Hope is the new batter.

No stopping Fraser-McGurk

There's no stopping Fraser-McGurk, who hits Hardik Pandya for two fours and two sixes to take Capitals to 89 for no loss after five overs.
There was no hundred inside the powerplay, though - neither for Fraser-McGurk nor Capitals as Bumrah conceded just three runs to Porel in the sixth over.
Porel joined the party in the seventh over, hitting Hardik for four and six off successive balls to take the side past 100. Fraser-McGurk didn't miss out either, hitting the final ball for a six.

Fifty for DC, fifty for Fraser-McGurk

It has taken just 2.4 overs for Delhi Capitals to get to 50 runs - the joint-fastest for a team in the IPL. In the next over, Fraser-McGurk brings up his own fifty, off just 15 balls. It's the joint-fourth fastest in the IPL.

Fraser-McGurk goes berserk

As we have seen in his fledgling career, Jake Fraser-McGurk does not waste any time getting his eye in. With his slightly open stance to left-armer Luke Wood, he kicked off the innings with 4, 4, 6 using his free-slowing bat swing and beautiful wrists. After a dot, he smashed Wood through covers for another boundary.
After taking 19 from the first over, he greeted Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the best all-format bowler in the world right now, with the same disdain. Bumrah started with a slower one and he launched it over long-on. To make it worse, Bumrah had overstepped. Fraser-McGurk smashed the free hit past long-on for four more.
That was not all. He also ended the over with a four.

Mumbai bowl; Kushagra in for Shaw for Capitals

Mumbai Indians have won the toss and decided to bowl first. "This is a small ground, so it's better to chase," their captain Hardik Pandya says. "Only one change. Gerald misses out; he has a stomach bug. So Luke Wood comes in."
Rishabh Pant says Delhi were looking to bat first only as they expect the pitch to slow down in the second half. "Instead of Prithvi, Kushagra comes in," he says. They also have Lizaad Williams making his debut for Capitals; Ishant Sharma presented him with his cap. Williams comes in for Nortje.
Here are the XIs

'It's like a sheet of marble'

The lowest team total in the two games played in Delhi this IPL has been 199, and today's pitch looks no different. One square boundary is just 59 metres; the other 64. The straight boundary is 73 metres.
"There's no grass on the pitch," says Sanjay Manjrekar. "It's rock-hard, like a sheet of marble. I think it's going to be slightly better for spinners. Given their spin attack - Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav - Delhi may have an advantage."

Warner still unavailable

Delhi Capitals will once again be without David Warner, who has a finger injury. Ishant Sharma, too, has also been ruled out for today's game.
Mitchell Marsh, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury, has been replaced by Afghanistan allrounder Gulbadin Naib. But will Capitals leave out Shai Hope and give him a game straightaway? We will get to know soon.

Playoffs race heats up

Hello and welcome to match 43 of IPL 2024. We are in the second half of the season, which means there is a significant gulf between the top two teams and the bottom two. Mumbai Indians are currently in the bottom two, ninth, with six points from eight games.
But all is not lost yet. If Mumbai beat Delhi Capitals today, they will go sixth, a spot occupied by Capitals at the moment.
While we wait for the toss, take a look at our preview.
