India v West Indies in India, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the first ODI, India v West Indies in India, 2011-12

At Cuttack, November 29, 2011 (day/night). India won by one wicket. Toss: India.
Three days after the Mumbai Test had gone to the last ball, Aaron again found himself in the middle with a match in the balance - this time India came through. When the openers rattled up 37 in four overs, it appeared they would win at a canter. But Roach's raw pace prised out three quick wickets, and they slipped to 59 for five before Sharma and Jadeja redressed the balance in an 83-run stand. Sharma struck a straight six and some fluent drives, and added a crucial 42 for the eighth wicket with Vinay Kumar as the target came into view. But Martin's leg-spin induced a last-minute wobble, and it was left to Aaron and Yadav, the final pair, to knock off the 11 needed, employing as much slapstick as skill. Yadav finished the chase with an on-driven four and seven balls to spare. Earlier, nine West Indians had reached double figures, but only Bravo and Hyatt - who added 75 for the fourth wicket - could get past 22 on an unchallenging pitch. Following low attendances at the bigger grounds during the England one-day series, the Barabati Stadium was full for its first international match in two years, but a section of the crowd reacted badly when India began to lose wickets. Some threw missiles in Pollard's direction, and Sammy called his team to the middle; play was held up for five minutes while the police restored order.
Man of the Match: R. G. Sharma.
